“Goddess Shailputri: The Inaugural Deity of Navratri Celebrations”
Navratri is a festival with religious practises. It is observed throughout the country and is followed by the Dussehra festival. Garba dances are popular during Navratri, particularly in Gujarat.
Hindus around the country commemorate the holiday with great zeal. The celebration is held during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon) in the month of Ashwin, hence the name. The arrival of the Goddess is commemorated on Pratipada Tithi, the first day of Navratri.
On the first day, Mata Shailputri is worshipped. She is also known as Hemavati and Parvati. Goddess Sati is reported to have given birth to King Himalaya as Shailputri after self-immolating.
Shailputri is a combination of two words: Shail (mountain) and Putri (daughter, daughter of mountains). She is seen with two hands, one holding a Trishul and the other a lotus flower.
