Hundreds of people were killed in a surprise Hamas attack, leading Israel to declare war and unleash retaliation strikes.

Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories are in shock after the Palestinian Islamist party Hamas unleashed the most devastating attack on Israel in 50 years. Hundreds of people were killed in a surprise attack on the morning of a Jewish holiday, and Israel has declared war.
So far, here’s what we know:
- More than 24 hours after the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise and unprecedented incursion into Israel – the worst in decades – Israeli soldiers continued to battle Hamas fighters on the streets of southern Israel on Sunday and conducted strikes that demolished buildings in Gaza.
- According to Israeli media, at least 600 Israelis were murdered, including 44 troops, and over 2,000 were injured.
- According to the Palestinian Authority, at least 370 Palestinians have been killed, including 20 children, and 2,200 have been injured as a result of airstrikes in Gaza since Saturday. In the West Bank, Israeli army fire also killed seven Palestinians.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was at war and that its adversaries would pay a high price. Hamas officials have stated that they are prepared for further escalation.
- As the fighting continued on Sunday, Israeli military sources reported “hundreds of terrorists” had been killed and dozens had been detained.
- The Israeli military stated that a “substantial” number of citizens and soldiers had been transferred to Gaza and were being kept prisoner.
- A quick exchange of strikes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah armed group fueled worries of a larger battle in northern Israel.
- In nearby Egypt, a police officer fatally shot two Israeli visitors and an Egyptian at a tourist attraction in Alexandria.
- The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Sunday, after the secretary general’s call for “all diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflagration.”
- According to a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office on Saturday night, Israel will cease delivering electricity, fuel, and products to Gaza.
- In an address on Saturday, US President Joe Biden strongly condemned Hamas attacks on Israel, adding, “The United States stands with Israel.” He previously called the attacks “horrific” and a “appalling assault” in a statement.

Gaza’s power authority has stated that the blockaded enclave’s sole power plant will run out of fuel within hours, leaving the Palestinian territory without power after Israel shut off supplies in punishment for recent Hamas attacks.
On Wednesday, Palestinian Energy Authority Chairman Thafer Melhem told Voice of Palestine radio that the plant would close in the afternoon in Gaza, which has 2.3 million people and is one of the world’s most densely inhabited locations.
“This threatens to plunge the Strip into complete darkness and make it impossible to continue providing all basic life services, all of which depend on electricity, and it will not be possible to operate them partially with generators in light of the prevention of fuel supplies from Rafah Gate,” according to a statement released by the Gaza government on Wednesday.
“This catastrophic situation creates a humanitarian crisis for all residents of the Gaza Strip,” the statement stated.
