In order to conduct the test, emergency notifications were sent to a random sample of Indian smartphones. When the message was received, consumers’ phones beeped loudly and flashed the word, “emergency alert: severe.” The message was sent twice, once in Hindi and once in English, separated by a brief interval.
This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE delivered through Cell Broadcasting System by Department of Telecommunication, Government of India, according to the flash message. As there is nothing you need to do, disregard this message. The National Disaster Management Authority has sent this message to test the Pan-India Emergency Alert System. It aims to improve public safety and deliver prompt alerts in times of need. Timestamp: 11:30 AM on October 10, 2023.
It should be noted that CBS is a technology that allows mobile operators to deliver text messages to all phones inside of a certain area, irrespective of the mobile network they are on. It is the perfect instrument for distributing emergency notifications because of its functionality.
The NDMA is carrying out these tests to make sure the warning system runs without a hitch and can reach the general public efficiently in the case of a real emergency.
Users received a similar flash message a few weeks ago. It has been announced that the Department of Telecommunications Cell Broadcasting System (DoT CBS) plans to periodically carry out comparable testing in various areas. These tests are intended to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the cell broadcast systems and emergency warning broadcast capabilities of mobile operators.
Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, revealed that the technology for cell broadcast is presently only available from foreign vendors. However, C-DOT is actively developing its own version. He mentioned that the cell broadcast technology is still in the developmental phase but is being tested on the Jio and BSNL networks. “The cell broadcast technology is under development and will be utilized by NDMA to send alerts directly to mobile phone screens during disasters. It is currently undergoing testing on the Jio and BSNL networks,” he informed PTI.
